PRESS RELEASE— January 18, 2017 — Morgan Hill Unified School District has made a significant and necessary change to Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten enrollment for the 2017-18 school year. Parents who attend Kindergarten Roundup on January 28th will receive a priority numbered enrollment packet for their school of residence and will have the opportunity to have their child assessed for Kindergarten readiness. Parents with priority numbered enrollment packets will be able to register their child before the February 28 district-wide enrollment date. Priority enrollment is only for Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten students for their school of residence and does not have any bearing on intradistrict transfers.

“Our Enrollment Center has seen a growing interest in Kindergarten enrollment this year,” said Superintendent Steve Betando of the change. “By allowing Kinder and TK students to enroll early, we are hoping to be able to better project our staffing needs in the fall.”

Along with staffing projections, MHUSD is looking to ease congestion on school sites on February 28th and deter parents from camping out on our campuses to be the first in line. Historically, Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten classes are the District’s largest population of new enrollees and, with city-wide growth, schools are expecting an even higher population this year.

Kindergarten Roundup is new this year for MHUSD and parents are strongly encouraged to bring their children. Along with picking up an enrollment packet, the Roundup offers students and parents a first-hand look at Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten life, introduces parents to our schools, and allows attendees the opportunity to have their child assessed for Kindergarten readiness. In addition, Kindergarten Roundup is a great place for parents and guardians to get a better understanding of what their child should know before starting school and learn tips on how to prepare them.

For parents who are unable to attend the Kindergarten Roundup, school sites will continue to distribute priority numbered Kinder and TK enrollment packets until the 27th of February. Completed priority packets must be returned to the school of residence on or before February 27th in order to maintain the priority numbering. All priority numbers will be void on February 28th. Packets turned in on or after February 28th will be date and time stamped and placed in the order they are received.

Parents who wish to transfer their kindergartener from their school of residence into another school within MHUSD must first register their child at their school of residence. They will then need to complete an intradistrict transfer request form and bring it to the district office on or after April 6, 2017. The District will not be accepting transfer requests for kindergarten prior to this date.

Enrollment packets for 1st through 12th grades will become widely available on February 16, 2017, online (, as well as, at all of our school campuses.
